Spring Starters
HEXASTART mechanical spring starters provide a purely mechanical, battery-free emergency starting solution for diesel engines that produces no electrical sparks. Using stored mechanical energy, the starter cranks the engine without relying on electrical systems, compressed air or hydraulic power. It is a reliable black-start solution for harsh, hazardous and remote operating environments.
Products
Five series covering engines from 0.5 L to 50 L.
Target Applications
Application types
Marine emergency generator sets Fire pump sets Offshore oil & gas platforms Mining equipment (such as coal mine rail cars) Data center standby generator sets Emergency generators for hospitals and large public venues Underground shelters and bunkers Off-grid remote power unitsCompatible engine brands
All brand names are the property of their respective owners and are used for identification purposes only.
Installation
Two ways to fit a spring starter.
Replacing an electric starter
Where the mounting fits, a spring starter can replace an electric starter without modifying the flywheel housing.
Dual-starter installation
A spring starter can be installed together with an electric starter. This needs a flywheel housing with two starter mounting positions; for engines with only one, a custom dual-lug flywheel housing can be supplied.
Key Advantages
No batteries, compressed air or mains power
Apart from manual winding, no other energy source is needed, so starting does not depend on batteries, compressed air or mains power.
Spark-free starting
No electrical sparks are produced during starting. Suited to oilfield, mining and chemical processing settings.
Low maintenance
Requires no battery replacements or oil refills, reducing maintenance work on site.
Built for demanding environments
Solutions can be adapted to high- or low-temperature requirements.
Pre-engaged pinion
The pinion fully meshes with the flywheel ring gear before cranking torque is applied, reducing gear-tooth impact and wear.
